Produced by Patrick Jordan, this record not only sees the development of a fresh new collaboration but the beginning of a potentially flourishing musical project.
With American Tennessee, Moussa-Mann embodies a fantastical character, who is on a quest to find a new and improved reality – singing, ‘I want your road trip in my hair, and I’ll take your Chevrolet to get me there.’ Building on this romanticised escape to a better world, through her lyrics, the record is unequivocally joyous and uplifting, courtesy of the punchy piano and airy strings section that are heard throughout.
With this visual take on song writing, that stems from her skills in filmmaking, a clear and coherent narrative is threaded throughout the song; something she is likely to continue building on for this anticipated album.
Her sublime sound incorporates a perfect blend of 80’s and 90’s inspired pop but also encounters nostalgic country sentiments too – a notion that certainly feels perfect to fit as a score in a movie. American Tennessee is a beautiful ode to finding finer freedom despite initially being afraid:
‘I’ll try and be brave and not to feel the pain’
With recognition on many occasions by the BBC before, Jay Moussa-Mann is already a defining musical name of the North-East meaning this will, undeniably, not be the last you hear from her.
